The official launch ceremony of STEM Feed Sri Lanka, a new feature for information related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects more confidently in the TikTok social media space, took place on September 11 at the ITC Rathnadeep Hotel premises.

The event was held by Hon'ble Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Hon'ble Deputy Minister of Digital Finance Eranga Weeraratne as the chief guests.

The Honorable Prime Minister showed that instead of trying to protect them by keeping children away from technology, we should work to guide them to use technology wisely, effectively and creatively and then technology will become a tool that helps children's growth rather than harmful Gave it.

Mr. Ferdous Motakin, senior government policies and state relations head of South Asia, senior government officials, education officials, and a group of officials from TikTok were also gathered for the event.

The official launch of STEM Feed, a new TikTok feature dedicated to providing reliable content on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), was held on 11 September at the ITC Ratnadeepa Hotel in Colombo.

The event was graced by Hon. Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, as Chief Guests.

In her remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized that rather than shielding children from technology, it is vital to guide them to use it wisely, effectively, and creatively, transforming technology into a tool for growth and learning instead of a source of harm.

The gathering was attended by Mr. Ferdous Mottakin, TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for South Asia, along with senior government officials, education leaders, and TikTok representatives.

An awareness event was held last day about the INFOTEL 2025 exhibition, the nation's leading information and communication technology exhibition aimed at empowering the digital economy. The exhibition will take place at BMICH from November 7th to 9th, with over 300 exhibitors and over 25,000 spectators including 5,000 students are expected to attend.

Here will be the opportunity to present the latest innovations in the fields of AI, fintech, cybersecurity, digital health, e-commerce and educational technology, and there will also lead government's digital startup projects aimed at building a digital economy where knowledge-based, equal opportunities for all.

Respected Deputy Minister of Digital Finance Mr. Eranga Weeraratne, expressing his views at the inaugural ceremony, Information and Communication Technology are now the key to the development journey in Sri Lanka. From electronic payment systems to online license releases, he also showed that use of digital platforms can help form services, boost transparency, and initiate citizens. Also said that a startup ecosystem provides backgrounds for IT-based education and innovation, will give youth and entrepreneurs the opportunity to successfully access the global digital economy.

Similarly, the Deputy Minister particularly stressed that ICT related exports, innovations, and global collaboration will take a key position in achieving the national goal of going to a $15 billion digital economy by 2030. He emphasized that opportunities like INFOTEL 2025 are an important platform in building Sri Lanka digitally strong and globally competitive country.

Sri Lanka is preparing to host INFOTEL 2025, the nation’s premier ICT exhibition, from November 7–9 at BMICH, under the theme “Fueling the Digital Economy.” With over 300 exhibitors and 25,000+ visitors expected, including 5,000 students, this flagship event will showcase cutting-edge innovations in AI, fintech, cybersecurity, digital health, e-commerce, and education technology, while highlighting government-led digital initiatives aimed at building an inclusive, knowledge-driven society.

Speaking at the inauguration, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, emphasized that ICT is now the backbone of Sri Lanka’s development journey. He noted how digital platforms, from e-payments to online licensing, are streamlining governance, enhancing transparency, and making services more citizen-centric, while ICT-driven education and a thriving startup ecosystem are equipping youth and entrepreneurs to succeed in the global digital economy.

The Deputy Minister further highlighted that ICT-enabled exports, innovation, and collaboration are central to achieving the national goal of a USD 15 billion digital economy by 2030. He stressed the importance of events like INFOTEL 2025 in bringing together industry leaders, innovators, academia, policymakers, and investors to build a digitally empowered and globally competitive Sri Lanka.

සම්බන්ධතා ව්‍යාප්තිය වේගවත් කිරීම, යටිතල පහසුකම් බෙදාගැනීම වැඩිදියුණු කිරීම සහ රට පුරා සියලු දෙනා ආවරණය වන ලෙස ඩිජිටල් ප්‍රවේශය පුළුල් කිරීම සඳහා රජය ස්වාධීන, මධ්‍යස්ථ- කුළුණු සමාගම් හි සහාය ලබා ගැනීමත් සමඟ එය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ විදුලි සංදේශ අංශයේ ඓතිහාසික වෙනසක් සනිටුහන් කරනු ඇත. එය (සංශෝධිත) 17 B වගන්තිය යටතේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා විදුලි සංදේශ (සංශෝධන) පනත අනුකූලවන අතර පළමු වරට යටිතල පහසුකම් සපයන්නන් සඳහා සුවිශේෂී බලපත්‍ර රාමුවක් හඳුන්වා දීම මෙහිදී සිදු වේ. එමෙන්ම මෙහිදී රටේ ඩිජිටල් පද්ධතියේ ස්වාධීන මධ්‍යස්ථ- කුළුණු සමාගම් හි කාර්යභාරය විධිමත් ලෙස හඳුනා ගැනීම ද සිදු වේ.

EDOTCO Secures Sri Lanka’s First Telecommunications Infrastructure Services License Sri Lanka took a significant step forward in advancing digital access yesterday (2) with the awarding of the country’s first Telecommunications Infrastructure Services License to EDOTCO Services Lanka (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of EDOTCO Group, Asia’s leading integrated telecommunications infrastructure provider.

The license, issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), introduces a new regulatory framework under Section 17B of the Sri Lanka Telecommunications (Amendment) Act, formally recognizing the role of independent mid-tier companies in strengthening the nation’s digital ecosystem. This marks a historic shift in the telecommunications sector, enabling greater infrastructure sharing and collaboration to accelerate connectivity across the island.

The government highlighted its commitment to working with independent infrastructure providers to expand coverage, enhance efficiency, and ensure that every citizen, including those in rural and underserved areas, can benefit from digital services and solutions.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, stressed that expanding connectivity is fundamental to enabling citizens to access government services and integrate digital technology into their daily lives. The event was attended by Waruna Sri Dhanapala, (Acting) Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy; Hans Wijesuriya, Chief Advisor on Digital Economy; Bandula Herath, Director General of TRCSL; Gayan Koralage, Managing Director of EDOTCO Sri Lanka; along with ministry officials and industry representatives.

Respected, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Mr. Eranga Weeraratne, attended the inaugural ceremony of the 2025 Annual Research Conference at the country's leading Engineering Research Forum (IESL) yesterday (02). The minister presented the seminar as a true celebration of knowledge, innovation and engineers' vital role in shaping the nation's progress.

Addressing the crowd, the minister mentioned that engineers have been the founders of this country's development through irrigation, electricity, highways and communication since history, and their role is to today an activity that goes beyond physical infrastructure development. He high pointed out that engineers have now become central stakeholders of digital transformation that reshape every aspect of society, from renewable energy, smart systems and healthcare and education to agriculture and government services.

The minister here emphasized the government's hardest efforts to advance digitalization by expanding broadband and digital public infrastructure, encouraging partnerships in AI, Fintech and advanced production sector, and strengthening research and innovation capacity. The Deputy Minister, who appreciated the engineering institute for creating this open platform, invited engineers and researchers to continuously lead innovations, and not only adapt to Sri Lanka's digital change but also contribute to operate it actively.

Yesterday (02), the Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, participated in the inauguration of the 2025 Annual Research Conference of the Institution of Engineers of Sri Lanka (IESL), the nation’s premier engineering research forum. He described the conference as a celebration of the pivotal role engineers play in fostering knowledge, innovation, and national progress.

In his address, the Deputy Minister emphasized that engineers have historically driven Sri Lanka’s development through irrigation, electricity, highways, and communications. Today, their contributions extend far beyond physical infrastructure, placing them at the forefront of the digital transformation shaping sectors such as renewable energy, smart systems, healthcare, education, agriculture, and government services.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing digitalization by expanding broadband and digital public infrastructure, fostering partnerships in AI, fintech, and advanced manufacturing, and strengthening research and innovation capacity. Deputy Ministers observation tour to Verahara branch of Automotive Department.

Yesterday (25) the Honorable Deputy Minister of Digital Finance Mr. Eranga Weerarathne and Honorable Deputy Minister of Port and Civil Aviation Janitha Kodithuwaku took part in a surveillance tour to the Verahara branch of the Department of Automobile Transportation belonging to the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Harbour and Civil Aviation.

Deputy ministers showed there, the medical certificate issued as a print copy by the National Institute of Transport Medical in Nugegoda to the people who are currently coming to obtain the driver's license, has also been disclosed that transparency is free and disorderly occurred, those irregularities are minimum. Online technique should be used for doing.

Also when the driver's license expires it will have to come out to Verahara to renew it has made the people huge uncomfortable. Accordingly, within a month, the technique was changed and showed that the driver's license is expected to set up an easy technique for renewal, and the basics for that have just started.

Avanti Senarathne, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Transport Highway Harbor and Civil Aviation (Development) Commissioner General Kamal Amarasinghe of Automotive Department, President of National Transport Medical Institute, Mr. Arosha Vidyabhushane, senior officers from the Department of Motorport Transportation including Mr. Arosha Vidyabhushane, Chairman of National Transportation Medical Institute, were participated.

Deputy Ministers visit the Werahera Branch of the Department of Motor Traffic On 25th August, the Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, together with Hon. Janitha Kodituwakku, Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, undertook an observation visit to the Werahera Branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles, which operates under the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation.

During the visit, the Deputy Ministers highlighted concerns regarding the medical certificate currently issued by the National Transport Medical Institute in Nugegoda for obtaining driving licenses. They noted that the printed certificates lack transparency and have been subject to irregularities, emphasizing the need to adopt an online system to reduce such issues. They also pointed out the difficulties faced by the public when renewing expired driving licenses, as renewals must currently be done only at the Werahera office. To address this inconvenience, steps are being taken to introduce a simplified renewal system within the next month, with initial work already underway.

The observation tour was also attended by Ms. Avanthi Senaratne, Additional Secretary (Development) of the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe, Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Vehicles, Ms. Arosha Vidyabhushana, Chairperson of the National Institute of Transport Medicine, and other senior officials of the Department.

Meta Digital Government Day Summit

In partnership with the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), Meta launched a Digital Government Day program to upskill media secretaries and representatives of state media institutions.

This is the first workshop that provided the necessary skills in using digital media such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads effectively to communicate the digital transformation journey.

The sessions were conducted and lead by Kaiya Waddell, Director of Government & Social Impact, APAC Neha Mathur, Partner Manager, Government & Social Impact Dr Priyanka Bhalla, Safety Policy Manager, South Asia Senura Abeywardena, Head of Public Policy, Central Asia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka & Maldives.

The discussions focused on several themes:

  • Digital transformation journeys for governments maximising reach and impact.
  • Best practices on community building
  • Engaging citizens through storytelling and best practices on reels and emerging formats

Highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening digital communication, the event was attended by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, Consultant at the Ministry of Digital Economy Sumudu Ratnayake and Director of Electronic Media at the President’s Media Division Isuru Anuradha.

මාලබේ පිරිමි විද්‍යාලයේ අලුතින් ඉදිකරන ලද තෙමහල් තාක්ෂණ අංශය පසුගිය දා නිල වශයෙන් සිසුන්ට භාර දෙන ලදී. මෙම උත්සවය බස්නාහිර පළාත් ආණ්ඩුකාර හනීෆ් යූසුෆ්, ඩිජිටල් ආර්ථික නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය ගරු එරංග වීරරත්න සහ පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී අසිත නිරෝෂන එගොඩවිතාන යන මහත්වරුන්ගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් පැවැත්විණි.

මෙම ආරම්භය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ අනාගත දක්ෂයින්ට අවශ්‍ය අඩිතාලම දමමින්, තාක්ෂණික හා ඩිජිටල් ඉංජිනේරුවන්ගේ මීළඟ පරම්පරාව නිර්මාණය කිරීමේ නව පරිච්ඡේදයක් සනිටුහන් කරනු ඇත.

The newly built three-storey Technology Faculty of Malabe Boys' College was officially handed over to the students recently. The event was held under the patronage of the Governor of the Western Province, Mr. Hanif Yusuf, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, and Member of Parliament, Asitha Niroshana Egodavithana.

This important initiative marks a new chapter in nurturing the next generation of technical and digital engineers, laying the foundation for Sri Lanka's future talent pool.

At the invitation of Principal Mr. Sisira Gunaratne, distinguished guests, including Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal, Sri Jayewardenepura Zonal Education Director Samanmali Dinamuni, Kaduwela Divisional Education Director Anuradha Samarakoon, along with several dignitaries, also attended the ceremony.

The United National Development Programme for Sri Lanka (UNDP) and the Ministry of Digital Economy signed this Agreement of Understanding (MOU) at the United Nations Center in Colombo.

Through this agreement, UNDP has been recognized as strategic collaborations of the Ministry of Digital Finance for “Disrupt Asia 2025”, known as the conference for Sri Lanka’s leading new entrepreneurs and innovation festival. This is a national level platform where innovators, investors and new entrepreneurs with vision.

For this was signed by Mr. Dhanapala, Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Mr. Asusa Kubota, Deputy Representative of UNDP Sri Lanka, Hon'ble Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Mr. Eranga Weeraratne, Senior Advisor to the President on Digital Economy, Dr. Hans Wijesuriya, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Marina Ten Madam, Mr. Fadil Bakir Markar, Head of Strategy Application Department of UNDP Sri Lanka - Digital & Innovation Team, Mr. Yasas Thalagala, Manager of Citra Lab - UNDP Sri Lanka Representative, and Citra Lab - UNDP Sri Lanka Digital & Service Planning Officer Deshani Senanayake Mr and Mr. Going also attended the event.

Through this collaboration, also emphasized that the UNDP organization is constantly cooperating with the Ministry, to achieve the goals of the National Digital Economic Plan in Sri Lanka.

Ministry of Digital Economy and UNDP Sri Lanka sign MOU to support ’Disrupt Asia 2025.

Colombo, Sri Lanka, 20 August 2025: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Digital Economy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently at the UN Compound.

The agreement recognises UNDP in Sri Lanka as a strategic partner to the Ministry of Digital Economy for ‘Disrupt Asia 2025’, Sri Lanka’s premier startup conference and innovation festival, where visionaries, investors, and disruptors come together. The agreement was signed by Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Acting Secretary for the Ministry of Digital Economy and Ms. Azusa Kubota, Resident Representative, UNDP in Sri Lanka, in the presence of Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy; Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chief Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka on Digital Economy; Ms. Marina Ten, Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP in Sri Lanka; Mr. Fadhil Bakeer Markar, Team Leader – Strategic Engagement, Digital and Innovation Team, UNDP in Sri Lanka; Mr. Yasas Thalagala, Lab Manager, Citra Lab – UNDP in Sri Lanka and Ms. Deshani Senanayake, Digital and Service Design Officer, Citra Lab – UNDP in Sri Lanka.

Through this collaboration, UNDP will continue to work closely with the Ministry in order to achieve the ambitious goals set forth in the government’s national digital economy blueprint for Sri Lanka.
