Work Commences on the Digitalization of Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) Project

With the collaboration of the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Ministry of Mass Media, activities of the Digitalization of Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) Project commenced on the 11th. Accordingly, the Project Management Unit was officially declared open at the new building located within the premises of the Broadcasting Corporation, under the patronage of Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy.

At this occasion, the Project Management Unit was officially opened, appointments were presented to the new staff, and the project’s new website, www.dttb.gov.lk, was launched.

Plans to launch the DTTB Project in Sri Lanka, which aims to usher the country’s television communication into a new era, were made as far back as 2014, along with the signing of the relevant Memorandum of Understanding. However, due to various reasons, the project remained at the ceremonial stage only, and even after 11 years, no actual commencement was seen. Under the guidance of the President, the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Ministry of Mass Media have now taken steps to expedite the project.

The DTTB Project is one that will benefit viewers, the government, and broadcasters alike. With the elimination of signal weaknesses, viewers will be able to watch programs with clearer visuals and also gain the ability to receive all channels.

The occasion was attended by Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy, Waruna Sri Dhanapala; Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, Bandula Herath; ministry officials; and heads of state media institutions, among others.
