Special Discussion on Digital Education Held with the Participation of the Ministry of Digital Economy

A special discussion focusing on the advancement of digital education and the integration of modern technology into education was successfully held on 6th August 2026 at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA).

The discussion was held with the special participation of Mr. Sanjay Kumar, former Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Government of India, and was co-chaired by Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, and Dr. Madhura Seneviratne, Hon. Deputy Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. The session was moderated by Ms. Vishakha Nanayakkara, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Moratuwa.

The primary objective of the discussion was to facilitate the exchange of experiences, practical approaches and knowledge gained in promoting digital education. Particular attention was given to ensuring equity in digital education, leveraging Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for education, identifying existing challenges and barriers and exploring solutions, as well as developing high-quality educational content.

In addition, extensive discussions were held on the integration of traditional and digital approaches, incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the education process, enhancing the digital skills and capabilities of teachers, and building a strong and inclusive education system through the active participation of all stakeholders.

The discussion was jointly organized by the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government, and the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA).

The event was attended by Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy Varuna Sri Dhanapala, Ms. Devika Lal, Counsellor (Economic and Commercial) at the High Commission of India in Colombo, Director General of the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) Mr. Vimukthi Janadara, senior officials of SLIDA, experts in the information technology sector, officials from the Ministry of Education, university academics, representatives of the private sector, and other stakeholders.
