A special workshop themed "Better Tools for Better Lawmaking," jointly organized by the Ministry of Digital Economy and GovTech Sri Lanka, was held 21st at the Legal Draftsman's Department (LDD).
The workshop was led by the Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, who presented the vision and framework for introducing AI assistance into the legislative drafting process. As an initial step, it has been proposed to utilize this AI technology for the proposed Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Bill.
Concurrently, a knowledge-sharing session was conducted by Mr. Trinesh Fernando, Legal Consultant at GovTech Sri Lanka, alongside Mr. Ishan Razeen and Ms. Chinthani Eparachi, showcasing the practical capabilities of AI-assisted drafting, validation, and trilingual production tools. In addition, extensive discussions took place regarding data readiness, safeguards, and the way forward for the pilot project.
The session was attended by Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chief Advisor to H.E. the President on Digital Economy and Chairman of GovTech Sri Lanka, Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy, and Ms. Dilrukshi Samaraweera, Legal Draftsman, together with senior officials from both the Legal Draftsman’s Department and the Ministry of Digital Economy.
